The University of Toronto has been ranked 21st in the world as the Times World University Reputation Rankings 2023 list is revealed!

On 13 February 2024, Times Higher Education (THE) released its World Reputation Rankings, which identify the world’s 200 most prestigious colleges and universities based on one of the world’s largest invitation-only academic surveys.

The results of the Times Higher Education World University Reputation Rankings are selected through one of the world’s largest invitation-only academic questionnaires, based on the judgement of published senior academics (those who know most about university excellence), providing a definitive list of the 200 strongest university brands in the world.

The survey asked academics about their specific subject areas and asked them to name 15 universities that they thought were the best in terms of research and teaching in general, and 15 universities that they thought were the best in terms of research and teaching in their own experience.

In short, the ranking is a ranking of the “top” universities in the minds of academics in each subject area. Although it is somewhat subjective, it does give an indication of the status and reputation of different schools in the minds of academics.

Ranking Methodology

The 2023 rankings are based on a survey conducted between October 2022 and January 2023, in which a total of 38,796 academics from 166 countries/territories were asked to select up to 15 universities that they considered to be the best in terms of research and teaching in their respective fields. The survey data was also used along with 15 indicators to compile the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which will be published in September 2023.

The survey reports a 2:1 ratio between research and teaching scores, with research given more weight. Times Higher Education’s expert advisers believe that respondents are more confident in their ability to make accurate judgements about the quality of research. The World University Reputation Ranking (WURR) scores are based on the number of times a respondent considers a university to be at the top of its field. The top-ranked institution is the one chosen the most times, with an overall score of 100.

Among the global university rankings, QS World University Rankings, U.S. News World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) are known as the four most authoritative world university rankings. As each list has its own evaluation focus, the ranking order of the same university in different lists will be different, and some schools even have a big difference, rather than just pursuing a simple ranking results, from which we want to get the information, when choosing a school to make a more comprehensive comparison of the significance of the existence of these lists.
