Volunteer & Activities

Part of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) requires that students must have a minimum of 40 hours community service before graduation. International students who have a high school diploma from their home country are required to complete 10 hours community service.

The purpose of this volunteer work is to remind students of their community obligations and encourage them to contribute to society. Brooklyn College encourages students to volunteer beyond the required number of hours.

Students are responsible for completing the required hours on their own time: during the lunch hour, after school, on weekends, or during holidays.

Students are also responsible for keeping track of their volunteer work under the guidance of the school. Students must choose an activity that is approved by the school. Some examples are:

  • Participation in local political events.
  • Assisting in non-profit organizations.
  • Assisting in sports activities at a community centre.
  • Helping senior citizens in their daily life.
  • Involvement in community events.
  • Volunteering at a local hospital.

Before committing to a volunteer position, students should obtain written permission from the guidance department or school principal in order to confirm the validity of the position.

* Students can always check the school bulletin board for up to date volunteer opportunities
